Could someone please supply info on bringing a private vehicle into Belize, ie insurance and other documentation required. Also the same for Quatemala. Do I have to cancel my Mexico insurance, I still have 3 & half months left on it. Maybe Lan Sluder as you are a wealth of info on Belize. Many thanks, Jimmy
Assuming you are coming as a tourist, same for Belize. Your vehicle info will be put in your passport. Except in Belize you are required to have liability insurance, which you can buy on a short-term basis at the Mexico-Belize border. No need to cancel Mexican or other insurance, unless you want to -- Belize only cares that you have insurance in Belize.

Just drove from Dallas through Mexico, through Belize, and now Guatemala.
I didn't bring my title, only current copy of my Texas registration.
Had no problems in Mexico.
Belize customs official asked for title. I told him that I left it at home for safekeeping and that I couldn't sell the car in Belize without the title anyway so he didn't have to worry about me selling it.
Apparently you can be taken to jail and face a judge for not having car insurance.
I bought a month insurance for $65 belize...a week is $30...in Belmopan.
Can't remember if I had to pay anything to get the car in.
Cost like $3 to have the car sprayed for insecticides, etc.
If you're driving the Hummingbird Hwy, stop at Hummingbird Haven on mile marker 29. Amazing place.

I stopped in to sleep one night and wound up staying 2 weeks!
Tell them Nam sent you.
Guatemala was not hard either but every slow doing the paperwork.
Cost $160 Q.
$20 Q to get car sprayed.
Change money before you get over to Guatemala so that you can pay for all of this.
No mention of needing car insurance.
Just done all this in January and the last 2 posts are spot on.
NB there is no cost to take the vehicle into Belize, but insurance is compulsory and bought just by the border from ICB agency.

#3, you MAY get away with just your registration but I know many cases where not having the title has cost the owner a lot. The registration is not proof of ownership.
Belize, Nicaragua and Costa Rica are the only counties that require insurance but both are bought right when you get your permit.
