Hello. I have been looking into Caye Caulker accommodations for March, 2013. Party of 2, older, non-party reveling adults. We would like to stay somewhere within walking distance to the main drag's restaurants and be able to have dinner and enjoy some evening, local atmosphere/music but then be able to walk back to our accommodations safely at night. I do know that Caye Caulker is small and most things are easily accessible. I have been considering Maxhapan Cabanas, Treetops, Amanda's Place, Colinda's Cabanas & Sea Dreams. I would like to keep the price under $100 per night inclusive of the 9% (or 12%) tax. Our basic requirements are for accommodations that are clean, quiet at night, have a nice, local "vibe" to them and be within 1/2 mile or so safe walking distance at night (husband cannot ride a bike, so that is not a viable option for us). A place that has it's own sea view terrace or dock would be nice, but not a deal breaker. Anyone with experience with any of these accommodations that would care to comment, especially as to location? I would also welcome recommendations of other places that fit the bill.
Hi, I would say that everything is within a half mile and you can stay almost anywhere for $100US. Those places are all nice. Why not just go to Caye Caulker without reservations in March and have a nice golf cart taxi drive you around so you can see for yourself?
Of the four you mention, Maxhapan probably as the most local vibe, but it is not on the water. I personally like Tree Tops, though it is owned by an Austrian woman. Tree Tops is near the sea but set back a little.
If you go in March without reservations, it is likely that most if not all of the places you mention with be full, though you will be able to find something available.

Thank you for your replies. While I like all of the places I have listed, I am leaning towards either Treetops or Amanda's Place. I have not gotten a reply from Treetops regarding availability; I know Amanda's is available. Maxhapan Cabanas intrigue me because of the rave reviews on TA and other sites. Does anyone know if Maxhapan is on the "Lee" side of the island, or more in the center (East/West orientation) of the island?
I am also considering Seaside Cabanas at this point, but it is probably the most expensive of the accommodations I have listed.
I am not a "fly by the seat of your pants" traveler, so, although a bargain might be had by not having a reservation, I would be so stressed out wondering what would happen to us that any "deal" would not be worth the stress. Ahhh - to be young and adventurous!
Also, thanks for the assurance that CC is relatively safe to walk "home" at reasonable hours. It will be just two of us, and we don't run too fast anymore........
As I say, Maxhapan is not on the water (either the back side or sea side) -- it's in the middle of the island.
Hi, You will learn to relax on Caye Caulker. It isn't about a deal but about your independence. I was fortunate to have good friends show me how to travel before I turned 60.

We really liked Seaside Cabanas a lot. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but the pool is really a nice thing on a hot afternoon after you have been out and around, walking, kayaking, snorkeling. The little breakfast provided is nice--coffee, fruit, cinnamon rolls. We added yogurt from our room fridge. You don't need the more expensive rooms with their own decks an hot tubs. The upper floor of the rooms facing the sea are just fine, and all have views and little decks. The bar is nice too. And the people who run it are helpful.

Hi jeanfromboston2; appreciate the information. I am going to check the web-site for Seaside Cabanas again. I think I may end up choosing them due mainly to their location, nice looking pool, good reviews on TA, and comments like yours in favor of them. Can you tell me if you felt it was quiet enough @ Seaside Cabanas to get a decent night's sleep? My DH and I are both kind of light sleepers; thank God for Ambien!

I am also a light sleeper. I do not leave my back yard without earplugs. You name it: church bells, bars, noisy airconditioners, dogs, roosters, concerts. But earplugs work.
Seaside Cabanas was very quiet. I do not recall using my earplugs there. Do not choose the honeymoon suite, as it is over the bar. The bar was generally not noisy but I wouldn't risk it. If there are people talking late around the pool, which I don't remember, you can just use the AC, and at least in our room it was not noisy.
