Hello,

When my husband and I visited Caye Caulker last winter, we really liked the relaxed atmosphere and great snorkeling. Now we are planning to go back to CC in December, for 10 days. Having secured our air tickets to Belize city, we are wondering where in CC we should stay this time. Could anyone help us?

If possible, we’d like to stay at a clean budget (about US$50 or less per night) accommodation without mosquitoes…

When we visited CC for the first time (Dec 2008), we stayed at the least expensive room at Treetops. Although the room was really nice and clean, the garden was full of mosquitoes…. It was impossible to relax there and every time we went into our room, we have to hustle not to bring some of the mosquitoes with us…. I hope that we are free from such problem this year although our accommodation budget is still very limited (We’d rather pay for snorkeling trips or lobsters…)

I’m currently thinking:
Trends Hotel on Main Street
Tina’s private rooms(bugs? Only for young and single?)
Mara’s Place on Front Street
De Real Macaw Cabanas
Tom’s Hotel (although too far away to/from the Split…)

What do you think about them? Are there any other accommodations you’d recommend?? We would be fine with basic rooms as long as it’s clean and have hot water and no bugs. A location convenient to either the Split or the center of the town might be a plus… (Last year, when we are not snorkeling, we spent most of our time either at the Split or around Dock Street(cut fruits! Chinese takeouts!)).

Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't remember having any problems with Mosquitos at all when I was there. I stayed at De Real Macaw if that makes a difference. Overall it seems like the ocean side of the island has a pretty solid evening wind which keeps the bugs down, and I have heard that the lagoon side is more prone to bugs.

As others have said, the key is to be as close to the sea as possible. In general, the farther back on the island, the more likely you are to have mosquitoes. I'm surprised you had a problem with mosquitoes in Tree Tops' patio. Although it faces the sea I guess it's far enough back and with some screening that you don't get the prevailing breeze.

I think any of the places you name would be okay in terms of mozzies. Note that Tina's has now expanded and taken over Auxillou Suites (both owned by sisters in the same family), so there are more private rooms, including some with A/C. More expensive, though.

We were there a couple weeks ago and stayed at De Real Macaw $42 per nite for clean room with ac and tv. It was a really nice experience. The owner is a pretty cool expat married to a Beliziean, he helped us set up a fishing/snorkeling trip with a local guide.

Thanks, everyone, for the inputs! We have contacted the above-mentioned accommodations and reserved a room at Mara's($42.50/night). Hope that they give us a room near the front side... M
