Hey Guys

I am planning a trip to Belize and the surrounding areas in November and as a keen fisherman back home, I'de like to try skin-diving for Lobster (Just one of those things that I feel compelled to do!).

I've posted this on the Caribbean forum but was suggested to check if anyone had info on the topic in Belize.

I'm sure that I could organise something with a local fisherman there but has anyone come across any fishing guides that have advertised it?

The trip is still in the planning process so we are open to any island/caye in Belize. I've also read that some areas are protected against this type of fishing?

Thorn Tree has been an excellent source for info in the past, cheers!

Tom

I don't know of any fishing guides or snorkel trips that advertise free diving for lobster, but some guides do that in season (starting June 15) for a lunch barbecue for people on their boat.

Most lobsters in Belize are taken not by diving but in traps somewhat similar to those used in the U.S. Fishermen have their specified lobster grounds where others are not supposed to poach.

You will need a fishing license before you can take lobster or any fish.

Adding to above, do be aware of the length/size lobsters you are allowed to capture, once proper licenses and info is obtained, and seasonal rules, as younger lobsters are normally a no-no (under 16 inches I think in Costa Rica), and where locals do go fishing for lobsters, (snorkel) which encompasses using a steel snare on a pole, it may be poaching, though its hard to enforce rules/laws in these countries, so please be conscience of your impact and actions.

Check with the local PADI dive shops for info, protection of the species and issues facing them in the region.

May I suggest going fishing with a local, out in the ocean for your dinner, supporting a local and also not encroaching on an species well being.

Thanks for the responses, more than I could of asked for!

I'll be sure to check in with a PADI dive shop to get the whole picture and the do's and don'ts. I don't want to poach ofcoarse, or break any regulations.

Jimmy that's a great offer thanks and i'de love to take you up on it. We will be travelling close to Honduras and I think a trip to Roatan could well be on the cards. I'll PM you soon when I have a better idea when we'll be there.

Thanks John500 and Smartcookie, I was planning on staying in Hopkins and Caye Caulker so I'll chase it up.

All the best!
