Markus666…I respect your opinion but we had a different view.

We just returned from 6 weeks in Belize and there are many faces and flavors to the country. We found travel easy and the people very friendly. The San Ignacio area offers much for outdoor experiences and adventures, Placencia Village is a wonderful community to visit, even San Pedro has appeal to travelers......nightlife, good restaurants and a large island to explore. The mainland has many Mayan ruins to explore.

There is much more to Belize than just Caye Caulker and Tikal.….and many travelers have different likes and dislikes. Each traveler should look at tour books and the internet in order to investigate on their own in order to discover their own vision of paradise. Hopefulist gave plenty of good links to investigate in her post. Explore the country and enjoy your adventure!

I'm sorry, 666, that you missed most of the good parts. To some folks I'd suggest heading back to find the hidden gems you overlooked but - given your attitude - it's just as well you avoid Belize altogether and leave it to the rest of us who appreciate it.

Markus666…..you are absolutely right, Tikal is in Guatemala not Belize. I was just responding to your thread.

As I said before, I respect your opinion. Travelling is an individual thing…”one man’s ceiling is another man’s floor” Happy trails and enjoy your adventures and thanks for posting.

If you want to do a mix of off-the-beaten track adventure and jungle luxury, then Toledo is great for that - Punta Gorda is a very quiet but friendly little town, and a great base for exploring the jungles, waterfalls, Mayan and Garifuna villages, cacao (chocolate) farms, unspoilt islands, and more.

There is a range of accommodation options - if you want to see and hear wildlife from where you sleep, then many of the options either a stone's throw from PG town (Hickatee Cottages), or a little further out (Belcampo, Cotton Tree, Sun Creek, Big Falls and more) have on-site wild howler monkeys, toucans, jaguars and more. You can do everything on tours, or "rough it" by getting the 6am bus with the locals out to the Mayan villages and explore on your own time.

The cayes in Toledo are further from shore - but they are also essentially completely unspoilt!
