I am after some local or traveller advice.

Honeymoon in Belize and the Eastern coast of Mexico (to Cancun).

We depart Las Vegas on the 8th June 2012 flying into Belize city, and my understanding is to get out ASAP. So we will head inland to Belmopan and San Ignacio.

We would like to stay in the rainforest and do some Mayan treks, monkey spotting, river trip maybe. Macal river, there is a trip down the river, but think we are out of season.

We would then head south to Punta Gorda for the old Belize experience. We would then work north along the coast, enjoying the culture, islands, snorkelling along the way. We need some suggestions here.

Near Riversdale there are some reefs off the coast that look a possible haven for wildlife. Eventually we look to reach San Pedro.

Anywhere north of here we are stumped. We need to end up in Cancun for our connecting flights to Miami then UK. We fly cancun to Miami on the 27th June.

Now I know this is the best community to ask for this help.

Thanx.

As to working your way along the coast, keep in mind that most of the coast of Belize is swamp and mangroves, with little or no road access. The exceptions are PG (which has no real beaches), Placencia, Hopkins and to some degree (few beaches) Dangriga and Gales Point. The reef in the south is far from the mainland coast.

Congratulations on your wedding and Belize is a great country for a honeymoon. How much time do you have for the trip? It is hard to recommend anything without knowing that......

Wow some info already guys. Well we are in vegas for 7 and a half days, fly to belize with one change at miami, then 19 days later fly from cancun to miami, for the return to the UK. We are both 27 years of age, keen cyclists, photographers, wildlife geeks (discovery channel qualified).

From San Pedro, you can get a water taxi to Chetumal. The boats depart early in the morning and you probably won't want to stay in Chetumal -- it's a nice city but not a lot for tourists except the Museum of Maya Culture.

Taxi to the ADO bus terminal and get a bus to Tulum -- stay there as long as you wish. I haven't checked lately, but there was a direct bus from Tulum to Cancun airport. Check the ADO bus site for updates.

Other good places to stay -- Playa del Carmen (very touristy), Isla Mujeres. There's also a shuttle bus between Playa and the airport.

I wouldn't suggest Cancun City, but if you wish, all the resorts are in the Hotel Zone.

I'd do San Ignacio, Tikal in Guatemala, Punta Gorda, Hopkins Village, and Caye Caulker. :-)

consider Raggamuffins tour from caye caulker to placencia with 19 days. there are bioluminescent worms on the waters edge on Rendezvous Caye. you could do a little spin into guatemala or honduras: rio dulce, copan or something like that.

The trek up the coast IMO would be a large mistake. As LAN said, it isn't a beach enviorment and there are also the array of poisonous reptiles to be wary of. Don't want one of you to die on the honeymoon. I know of folks that have tired this in Nicaragua and would not do it given a second chance. There's no coastal road and all natives are not friendly.
That being said. I would do a nice jungle lodge in San Ignacio and trek around there. See the ruins and do a cave. Some will rent canoes and you can canoe to town on your own, a nice trip. Go visit Tikal which is worth the trip if you have the time and you do. Head to Placencia and stay somewhere on the peninsula, with no transport the town would be the best. You can hike the beach there, I believe the peninsula is 14 miles long. You can also go to the Jaguar reserve and a couple of smaller ruin sites from there. I think you would enjoy this more than Punta Gorda. Head to Caye Caulker for snorkeling and diving.

Yes, this is what most people do, but there's a reason for that. A trip is the adventure that you make it. Just going to different spots doesn't neccessarily increase the adventure, sometimes it deminishes it.

The only place in Belize worth going to is Caye Caulker. Do Tikal, Caye Caulker then bail for Mexico
