Hiking in Cayo district?

Hi,

We are wondering if there are options for a long (jungle) day-hike in the Cayo district (we're staying near San Ignacio), preferably self-guided. We're all experienced hikers, in great shape, and just want to get out somewhere a little more remote for a day. I've heard Cockscombe is great, but it's unlikely we'll have time to get down there. I haven't read about any options similar to Cockscombe near Cayo...? We're in Cayo for the ruins (Tikal, Caracol), but want a serious hike also!

When we stayed at Macal Jungle Camp I hiked hard most of a day straight from camp. It was a variety of farming and jungle areas and including some minor Maya sites - awesome day, though it didn't compare in terms of views and waterfalls to Cockscomb.

Don't miss the caving. I've visited Chechem Ha and ATM which both include nice hikes in, though guides are required. I'm looking forward to Actun Chapat and/or Mountain Cow cave this summer.

You could spend weeks hiking in the Mountain Pine Ridge, the largest reserve in Belize, and also in the Chiquibul.

I'd stay away from any region very close to the Guatemalan border.
And read up on the varieties of snakes in the region.

In Cayo I should also have mentioned Elijio Panti National Park, which is accessible via San Antonio village. Like most of the Pine Ridge and Chiquibul, it's best hiked with a local guide who can keep you out of trouble and also point out things you'd never see on your own.
