Ok guys - the BIG question: To go or not to go???? Read hopefulist's +ve report and the idea of spending a week there does really appeal (and fits our budget which Isla Marisol won't!)...but not if we're going to be held hostage or the resort is really in that bad a state of repair....!!! We are also keen divers - my fiance is a rescue diver with over a 100 dives so he will make up for my inexperience should we have a shady instructor...! HELP!
No one can answer that for you, but I think you already know that. All we can do is share our experiences and opinions which we've already done. Good luck with your decision and, if you decide to go, you'll be satisfied if you have half the fun we had. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the advice...qwovadis, can you really get the money back if its a negative experience?

And hopefulist - I know you enjoyed your time there - did you see evidence of it being really run down with rubbish everywhere? Tough decision! Thanks - I owe a HUGE travelogue!!
We were impressed with the improvements they'd made since we were there in 2003 including upgraded stoves and composting toilets. The beaches near our cabin were free of debris but you could still see bits in the area by the docks. Garbage is an ongoing battle on all Caribbean islands and beaches; some places go out of their way to tidy things up daily, rake the sand to thwart sand flies and remove palm fronds, etc. The beaches in La Ceiba, Honduras, for example are incredibly garbage-strewn with a strangely high representation of shoes - I've always wondered about that. I'd say Glover's is on the cleaner end of the middle range in my experience.
The high representation of shoes on beaches is from drowned victims of shipwrecks which are common on the treacherous reefs. Notice that they are all synthetic shoes. That is because those starving in lifeboats consume the leather ones, before they start in on each other.
then again, they might be from those who get on Marsha's bad side, and mysteriously "disappear"
qwovadis has a very strange understanding of credit cards- of course you cannot claim a refund because you had a "negative experience"....that could basically cover anything! A credit card booking will protect you in the event of the hotel going into receivership or some other occurrence where your booking is not fulfilled and no refund is offered.
