Any of those options, trina.
If you're staying a long way from the the centre of town, then the Coastal Express water taxi might be the best way. It operates along the coast of Ambergris (it doesn't go to CC).
Otherwise, bicycle or golf carts (as far as they go).
Cabs (that is, cars) now go part of the way up North Ambergris. I think as far north as Las Terrazas. Pretty expensive, though.
And there are cabs that will take you most anywhere on the island south of the river channel, at reasonable cost.
That's in addition to water taxis and rental golf carts and bikes.

Thanks so much....I'll be checking back for more info as we get closer. I know I'll wish I knew more before I get there. I guess I should buy the guidebook. What do you think? Useful?

slan writes for Fodor, and has published a book of his own. mighty fine writing, i might add.
I have 3 Belize guidebooks and they're all good, slightly different perspectives: Lan's Fodor's guide, Moon Handbook, and Explorer's Guide. In addition to travel specifics they have cultural and historical background sections and suggested itineraries. Also check out the downloads on Lan's website, Belize First. Happy trails!
hopefulist, some of your comments (on Hopkins) are on page 200 of the new 2012 Fodor's Belize (just published). Hope Fodor's New York office sends you a free copy of the guide, as has been the policy in past years for those who comments on Fodors.com were used ... but they are cutting back so much they didn't even send me free author's copies and I had to buy them!
