"The sand is not obtained by the contentious dredger but brought in by boat loads from various locals dug from the back of the island.

the Western side of the split will be increasing the beach size by creating a protective wall and filling it with sand. The wall is built up using pimento (wood) and will eventually look much more natural than many sea walls around the island!

as usual, exercise caution, walking alone night or day."

Thanks Eddy, That's what I thought. Lan said they were to tie up boats. Good luck with another attempt at a seawall. They never work. The first storm will blow it away again.

How did the seawall at caye chapel hold out? I think i recall Chocolate expressing misgivings on that.

and indeed, if that massive concrete thing got knocked, what chance have wooden boards or pilings?

as with Indiana rivers, water does as it pleases.

Yeah, Caye Chapel is still there for rich gophers. The sea wall is still there but will be breached with the slighest storm flushing out the rodents and their golf clubs. I thought it was against the law to destroy mangroves? I spoke to Chocolate for quite awhile and he said the whole place is going to hell because the kids just don't care.

I thought the manatee tour with Chocolate was worth the price if only for his rantings about what was screwed up in the area. He moved over from Abomigrease Caye, you know - and has nothing good to say about what it has becom. I have also communed him when I found him sitting outside his place, mending equipment. He is a wise man.

So I take it that there is something unpleasant about Ambergris Caye? Sorry, new to this forum, and very unfamiliar with Belize, but I've always wanted to travel there. Have a trip planned for late September into first week of October (I know, may rain the entire time, and hopefully no hurricane), and booked a place on Ambergris Caye. Just want to relax, see the sights, and do some snorkel. Last snorkel that was really awesome was at Great Barrier Reef and I've heard that the reef off Belize is the second largest? Just here to gather info and to hear what you all have to say. It's too late anyway, it's already booked for husband and my anniversary. I was going to post separately, but perhaps I may ask the question here: We fly into Belize City. Apparently there are 2 ways to get to Ambergris with luggage??? Book a 5 minute flight to somewhere (not sure where) and pay for a water taxi from there, or take a 25 minute cab ride to a water taxi. What do you know of that?

Thanks

Trina

This is from Mr B's site (http://belizebus.wordpress.com/)

Water Taxi

A water taxi is a boat, with seating for up to about 80 passengers, providing transportation across water. Water taxi trips are sometimes cancelled in rough conditions.

  1. Water taxi services between Belize City, Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye (see websites for schedules & fares)

a) Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association:
http://www.cayecaulkerwatertaxi.com

b) San Pedro – Belize Express Water Taxi
http://www.belizewatertaxi.com/

c) San Pedro Water Jets Express:
http://www.sanpedrowatertaxi.com/index.html

Here’s another service that transports passengers from the international airport to Ambergris Caye:
http://www.tropicferry.com/

From what I understand, this is more of a door-to-door service. Tropic Ferry offers pick-up at the airport, private a/c shuttle transport to their boat (a 3 minute drive to a marina located across the highway from the airport), boat transport directly to your dock on Ambergris Caye, and they throw in all the rum punch you can drink.

Simplytraveling: Thanks that is very helpful. I'll research the info that you provided.

Eddystonelight: You are simply hilarious....are you local and don't care for the commercialization of the area? Or are you a happy traveller who feels the same? Of course, your input is appreciated, and funny as well. Yes, I know what Ambergris is, but it's still a lovely sounding word.

Long wait for vacation, lots of time to make plans....

Hi Trina,
Why don't you visit both Caye Caulker and Ambergris and see which one you prefer? Too bad you already made reservations. The hotels will be nearly empty that time of year and you could have you pick for way less money.

Greggo:

Yup, reservations are already made, but I still have lots of options what to see and where to visit/ruins, snorkel, etc. I'll visit where you suggest. It sounds like a fun place, but now I'm stuck with expensive accommodations at Belizean Cove Estates....which sound lovely, but you are correct, pricey....I'm a little beyond the back packing/hostelling stage in life anyway.

Thanks

Trina
