Just need a few suggestions on my 14 days in Belize, please. This will be my first trip, although I've been through a lot of Central America.

I'll be arriving in BC then departing on the Raggamuffin overnight trip the following morning, which drops me in Placencia a couple of days later. From there I plan to make my way to Cayo/San Ignacio, over to Tikal, then back up to Caye Caulker to spend my last few days on the beach.

So my question is what to do on the leg between Placencia and San Ignacio. I plan on getting between the two by bus, but I'm really kind of wide open about how and what to do. Are there some things between the two that would warrant spending a few days making my way to San Ignacio, or should I just go ahead there and spend my time going to ruins and caving?

I'm not too concerned with activities in Placencia, since I'll be snorkeling for the first few days, then spending the last few in Caye Caulker. I was thinking more along the lines of the Jaguar Preserve or really anything else cool that would be worth lingering for a day or two on the way to SI. Thanks.

  • Hopkins Village -- interesting, friendly Garifuna village with several excellent restaurants (Chef Rob's two places, Beaches & Dreams, Innie's, the pizza place) good beaches

  • Cockscomb Wildlife (Jaguar) Preserve -- good hiking

  • Mayflower Bocawina National Park -- good hiking, accessible waterfalls

  • Gulusi Garifuna museum near Dangriga -- small but interesting museum

  • Hummingbird Highway (first part is actually called Stann Creek District Highway) -- most beautiful roadway scenery in Belize

  • Billy Barquedier National Park -- you can arrange hike to some falls

  • Inland Blue Hole -- nice place for a cool dip

  • Belmopan -- not a lot for visitors but worth seeing once, a few good restaurants (Corkers)

You can do all this (more or less) by bus, but it will take more time than you think. For example, the Cockscomb Preserve is 6 or 7 miles off the Southern Highway, so you'll have to hike in, hitch a ride or hire a taxi.
