I am supposed to be on a flight on the way to Belize from the UK at the moment but have been grounded due to the ash cloud :-(. Its looking like flights may not resume for a couple of days so am trying to sort out contingency plans for our itinerary depending on how long we'll actually get in Belize. Instead of staying at the Zoo the first night, we may now just need to stop off on the way to San Ignacio. Is there somewhere to leave luggage rather than cart it round with us, and would be be ok getting onwards travel (public bus) to San Ignacio in the evening after the zoo has closed?

Thanks

Sorry about your delay - hope you can ship out soon! There's an education room across from the gift shop where they'll let you stow your bags while you look around. They won't really be watching them so keep valuables with you. there's a nice bus shelter by the road where you can wait for passing buses. You'll need to actually wave your hands by the roadside to stop a bus, though - they won't stop just because folks are sitting in the shelter. If you try to flag a bus and it doesn't stop, it may be an express bus. Have a great trip and please tell us all the details!

Thanks for your replies. Flights are grounded again today so looks like I'm off back to work until things change, whenever that may be!

This is great information about bus travel, I have just printed off the timetables.
Could anyone tell me when you leave the zoo, do you wait on the side of the road to go to Corozmel and how long does it tkae.
Any good hostals in Corozmel? we want to stay the night before crossing over to Mexico
thanks Heather

I'm guessing you mean Corozal. You'll want to wait across the road from the zoo to flag buses heading to Belize City, then transfer to a Corozal-bound bus there. You can check out good budget to mid-range lodging options in the Toucan Trail section of the Belize Forum. Good luck!
