May is a pretty good time to come to Belize. Although it's hot (usually the hottest month of the year in Belize), it's before hurricane and tropical storm season, and you get lower off-season rates while everything is still open

Ambergris Caye sounds like the place for you. It's one of the island off the coast - beaches, diving, shopping, restaurants, bars....

Let us know what type of accommodation you would like, and a price range, and you'll get some good suggestions.

Try Thatch Caye Resort. My wife and I stayed there amidst many honeymooning couples and all were having a fantastic time. Thatch Caye won the travellers choice romantic getaway award from Trip Advisor and that was what attracted my wife and I to begin with since it was our anniversary. We also did some scuba diving while there and it was fantastic. I have been diving in several other places since then in other parts of Central America and the Caribbean and none can compare with what I saw there.

Thatch Caye is a good suggestion. When I was there in June the only other guests at the time were a honeymooning couple from Georgia. They were having a great time.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as my fiance and I continue to consider Belize as our honeymoon destination... thanks for all the info so far!!

Has anyone stayed at Sun Creek lodge in PT? I was warned about staying in a thatch roof hotel and this hotel has only thatch roofs. The health department said that the reduviid bug also known as kissing bug falls from the thatch. It causes Chagas disease, which is quite serious. Any advice would be helpful.

I've spent hundreds of nights in thatch-roof cabañas in Belize -- well-maintained thatch as you'll find in many lodges and hotels in Belize doesn't harbor the bugs that cause Chagas.

Never stayed at SunCreek Lodge a little north of Punta Gorda, but I have visited it several times. A nice budget spot with very knowledgeable and helpful owners. If you want a spot in that general area without thatch I'd suggest Hickatee Cottages, about a mile from PG.

Thanks Lan, That makes me feel better about staying in a thatch roof place. Unfortunately Hickatee was booked when I first contacted them and Coral House has two rooms available but the one that can accommodate four of us is booked. So we would have to book two rooms with them and well that adds up real quick when you are staying 4 nights. Sun Creek was reasonable.

I looked at their online pictures, looks pretty nice. Budget prices are great as long as it is a clean place. During our last trip to Belize we stayed in Dandriga one night at Ruthies cabanas because we had missed the water taxi and we got eaten alive by bugs during the night. Not sure what they were but we were covered in small red bumps the next morning. I don't want to experience that again. Great deal, but dirty too.

I am traveling with my husband, 21 yr old son and 9yr old daughter. Do you think I will be making a mistake by staying at Suncreek. I'm wondering what we will do in the afternoons when we get back from an excursion. Does it look like a cool place to hang out in the afternoon and evenings? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
