Where possible avoid staying in Belize City - accommodation is overpriced and not of a high standard. It's not particularly nice to wander around at night. Also, there's nothing really to see there. I flew into Belize from the U.K. and found I could have got a taxi from the airport to the bus station and on to San Ignacio or a taxi to the water taxi terminus to visit Caye Caulker without staying in Belize City. A word of warning about the bus station - it is ramshackle to say the least and you have to ask around to find the times of buses - there are no ticket offices and you pay on the bus, these are old U.S. school buses so not so comfortable for long journeys with nowhere to put luggage.

Good to know.

I was expecting a fancy bus station, and was pissed to the last degree to find it ramshackle! I turned right around and returned to the airport in a taxi (after 2 tire blowouts) and right back to the good ol' states! I'll never come back! Furthermore, the local indigenous personnel are mainly black skinned.

I second all this about Belize City. Been a few years since I was there, but last time I did I was with a couple of German friends (female) and this guy walked up to me and asked if I would lend him one of them. ???? The city has nothing to offer, might as well stay away.

On the contrary, the jungles and cayes are good fun!
