Hello,

We are two couples planning a quick trip to Belize in early April. We'd like to spend about 3 nights on Ambergris Caye, preferably at a beach front villa type of place with access to good snorkeling and diving and nice and relaxed.

We were looking into the Tranquility Bay Resort, which seems great for our needs, but unfortunately they are booked for when we will be there.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also, related, can anyone suggest a good 1-day dive boat trip from San Pedro out to Blue Hole/Lighthouse/Half Moon area that would allow our one advanced scuba diver to do the Blue Hole, while allowing the rest of us to get in some nice dive sites?

Any information is greatly appreciated! Thank you,
Jason

There are tons of great seafront condotels and hotels on Ambergris Caye, but Tranquility Bay is unusual in that it is way far north where the barrier reef is close to shore. At most other hotels the reef is far enough away from shore that it's not possible (or safe, due to boat traffic) to swim to the reef, though in some places north you may be able to kayak out.

The top end condotels and villa type places include Grand Caribe, Coco Beach, Pelican Reef, The Phoenix, Victoria House, Xanadu and Las Terrazas, among others. More moderate places include Banana Beach, Mata Rocks and Caribbean Villas. Corona del Mar is a less expensive spot without a pool but a nice, affordable choice.

Several dive shops do Lighthouse. Amigos del Mar is perhaps the best known -- they are well run and have big boats. You could talk to Amigos and other shops and see how they would handle the needs of the divers in your group. Not all divers who go out to Lighthouse do the Blue Hole -- some divers may not be qualified or may have done it before. Some just snorkel it. It's a long trip, and prices have gone up recently.

Keep in mind that early April includes Easter, and Easter is VERY busy in beach areas in Belize, so book ahead.
