We are travelling to Culebra for a January family wedding and are thinking of maybe putting together three weeks or so of travel. What are the airline routes like in & around Puerto Rico ? Cuba, St Kitts, Dominican Republic have all been considered by us for different reasons. If you have ideas of easy flights ( or does one have to head back to Miami as a hub for that area ), fun ferries ( or other freight / cruise opportunities ) please inform. Highlights for us -music, discovery…

I heard the Haitians are getting the "bums rush" from DR. Any news on this from on the ground there?

hello travellers!
i'm going to hispaniola (dates above), travelling solo but would like to meet up with other like-minded travellers.

i'll probably spend about 10 days in DR, beach/mountain trek/rafting,

then go to haiti for a couple of weeks, PaP/S coast/caves/waterfall/north coast, then back to DR for a few days before heading to cuba.

drop me a line if you're going to be in the area and fancy meeting up for some of the above, or other things.

Island hopping

Hi, i couldn't find any recent posts related to this in the forum so i thought i'd just go ahead an create my own ;)

Not sure if this is a common thing around other regions in the Caribbean, but after visiting St Martin last year and (being the backpacking type) quickly visiting Anguilla and St Barth too it struck me how each island seems to market/present themselves as separate places, rather than working together and making it clearer for tourists how close they are together?

Am i missing…

I just bought tickets to Guadeloupe, March 2016. We are a family of 5 ( kids aged 5,10,12), and have been to Mauritius, Boracay / Philippines, Florida, Greece etc.

When we are travelling, we always try to locate quiet places with local "touch" - not mainstream all-inclusive - but self catering; and we love it:) We like to have grocery stores etc nearby, but not to crowdy places

I am not sure where to go after we have our touchdown in Guadaloupe - any suggestions? Mainland Guadaloupe or…

La Citadelle is far and away the most interesting site in the Cap-Haitien area. Information from other sources is largely accurate. The keys to a visit are starting early to avoid the heat of the day; deciding whether to walk, ride on a donkey, or pay for motorized transport 2/3 of the way up (then decide to walk or ride a donkey). From the ticket booth, the path is 8km to the top. The road/path is rough hewn rock...not a smooth patch the entire way. It will take someone in reasonable shape…

Sources have posted before that there is a mini-van service from the Santo Domingo airport to Zona Colonial that is an alternative to taxis. This is sort of true. Although the nice, I-want-to-be-helpful people at the Information desks at the airport don't seem to know it, private mini-vans ARE available on the far left side, upper level Arrivals. They are unmarked, hold 7-8 people and leave when full. The cost is DR70 pesos. Taxis will ask for DR 1000 pesos (but can be negotiated down)…

Taxi fares in Santo Domingo

In theory, taxis charge based on what zone they are within the city and surrounding areas. The reality is that every fare is negotiable and the more American/Western European you look, the higher the starting point. I just returned last week and every taxi, over 3 days, regardless of starting point or destination was negotiable. You can also generally fix a price in US$. Do not expect the driver to have any change other than in DR pesos, however.
