I am looking for a place to snorkel in the Caribbean. I want a place that is an easy single flight from the east coast. I already have my gear and everything. We want to snorkel that is the big thing and particularly with reefs and fish in a natural environment. We want a nice resort feel with the beach front pools. We don't really care for the cruise crowd type of people or the excursions that every single person does. Just a casual place to go snorkeling. We haven't really narrowed it down but any Caribbean island that has this feel would be nice. Particularly a place where you can walk out and snorkel without taking a boat out.
I can recommend visiting Grand Turks Island for snorkelling; you can even hangout with sting rays nearby. However, the island itself is pretty boring and just cool if you want to chill out by the beach or see the Apollo 12 Lunar Landing site. I haven't snorkelled anywhere else in the Caribbean, I'm afraid. I can only recommend good hiking spots. Oh, and if you're flying you should avoid LIAT Airlines. It has the worst airline service I have ever experienced.
