Hi!

I plan to go sailing with 3-5 friends in the Carribbean from ~christmas 2016 to January 7th 2017.
We don't have a specific region in mind, the area around Guadeloupe (Dominica, Antigua, Barbuda,...) looks very appealing though.
Neither of us can sail, so we are looking for a good and knowledgable skipper and a boat (catamaran preferred).
Who has experience with a skipper, knows someone or has contacts?

thanks a lot
stefan

Stefan, If you are still investigating this, I can help you. The area that you are looking at will give you a nice mix of remote and busy beaches/towns. I just came off of a sail where I had a 42 foot cat (I captained it myself) and we went to a number of the islands you mention. While you can do the research on the beaches and towns on each island, I would encourage you to look at the local charter companies in either Guadeloupe, Antigua (I did not see any cats for rent), or Martinique, or the best location to start would be St. Vincent. If you have 5 people, the first challenge is getting to the location and not taking up all of your vacation time. The second is getting the proper boat. I love Cats for inexperienced guests as they are roomy and comfortable and more comfortable if you have a little roll in the water. You will need a four cabin setup as the captain needs one unless you want to have a guy or lady captain sleeping in your kitchen when you wake up. You should expect to pay around $250 US per day for the captain.

With a short google search, I found a number of charters in this area. The big companies are Sunsail and Barefoot. Smaller companies are good as well. The age of the boat is an indication as to the price. All will be seaworthy, but the older ones get more tired but still great to sail. I like the brokers like Latesail that know all the deals that are offered and you dont pay anymore for them to access the charter companies.

These islands are great for that adventure and luxury that you have in your mind. Snorkle, dive, jump off of cliffs, drink wine, rent scooters, paddleboard, sail the sea at night...all like you imagine. If I can be so bold, another option and easier to get to via plane and yet with some nice island access is St. Martin. You can sail on the beam to Saba, Barbuda(I love this place and have some great stories), St. Barts (My adult son's favorite island), Anguilla, St. Kitts......
