My fiancee are trying to figure out a wedding date for next spring/early summer. For our honymoon we plan on going to Miami, Bahamas, Cancun, and a few days in New York City for site-seeing and shopping (since that is where we will catch our plane back to Egypt anyway).
I wanted to ask if we go on our honeymoon in early-mid June and spend at least the first 2 weeks in Caribbean, would we be risking going in the hurricane season? Or are the places I mentioned not prone to hurricanes at that time? I really need help with that and I would appreciate if all you travel experts can help me out :) In addition, what do you think of our itinerary and do you reccomend any changes?

Thanks!

Dina

Although hurricane season "officially" starts the beginning of June, the risk is extremely low. More realistically, I don't think you have hardly any risk of a hurricanes until at least around mid-July. Miami, Bahamas and Cancun are all certainly in the hurricane belt, but like I said, I wouldn't worry about hurricanes. You start getting a little more rain in all those place starting around early June, but it is usually just a passing storm that won't last more than an hour or two.

I wouldn't hesitate at all going to any or all of those places in early to mid-June. Good luck!

Good advice from #1; all areas are at risk by being hit with tropical depressions/weak tropical storms at that time of year, but that risk is, as previously stated, very low.

You may wish to reconsider the Bahamas if you want to travel to a Caribbean destination. The Bahamas is not in the Caribbean, and instead consists of an archipelago of low-lying islands that stretches from a point near to the South Florida Coast southeast nearly to the coast of Haiti. While many treasure the Bahamas for their relative isolation, friendliness, and again -- isolation, most of the islands do not have the infrastructure to cater to the casual tourist and are best considered to be niche destinations. Nassau/New Providence and Grand Bahama do cater to the general tourist trade, but neither are particularly attractive to the average tourist and I'd be hard pressed to recommend any vacation itinerary that would include a stop at either one for more than two days.

Thanks mgtraveler and David for your advice!
I get what you're saying about the Bahamas... What we were thinking is that since we're travelling a long distance we dont want to take long flights from one destination to another. I'm sure about Cancun, Miami and New York at the end of our trip. But I really want to include an island. I heard Negril beach in Jamaica is beautiful, but I read on the lonelyplanet online guide that there was a hurricane recently and that kind of scared me. I also heard Saint Lucia was one of the most beautiful islands, especially for honeymooners, but I dont know if it's a short flight from Miami or not (by short I mean 1 to 1 1/2 hours.)
What do u guys suggest??

Thanks a lot for your help... it's much appreciated

Also, I'm not pro cruises since i like to explore on my own and i dont like the restriction that a cruise would impose on you. But On the other hand, do you think it would be a good way to see several islands in a short time rather than spending a whole week on one island?
We can only be away for 25 days including Miami, Cancun and New York!

it doesnt matter where you go, its mostly nice in the hurricane belt during the summer, but if there is a watch set, get out of dodge!!!

dhanafi, it seems that you have an itinerary of about 10-14 days for the Caribbean (with the rest being devoted to Cancun and New York), and you can see quite a lot of it in that time if your budget is as generous as your patience will need to be for an island-hopping vacation.

You haven't indicated what you're seeking in an island destination -- are you looking for great beaches, history, culture, ecotourism, shopping, nightlife, or a combination of all of those things? Keep in mind that some islands specialize in one or each of these areas, but not all have everything that you might be looking for. Others might have too much -- Jamaica is the third-largest island in the Caribbean, and is hugely diverse. Most vacationers heading to Jamaica (which should have recovered nicely from Hurricane Dean by the time you plan to travel) pick one region on the island, and stick to exploring that area alone. A cross-island exploration could easily take up two weeks of your time.

Multi-island trips can get pricey and planning even short jaunts is usually a hassle. I'd leave off further explorations for future trips if you like what you see the first time.

Miami/South Florida is, of course, a destination in itself, and you won't see it all in two days; I'd allow five (Miami/Calle Ocho/Miami Beach, two days; Key West or the Everglades, one day; drive up A1A, one day). You can also take a day trip to Abaco from Florida if you must include a Bahamian island on your itinerary; Nassau has many points of interest, but it's a pretty demanding destination, and not the type of place that you'll enjoy on a day trip. Your itinerary might therefore look like this:

Cancun: one week ---> Jamaica: one week ---> Miami: five days ---> New York: one week.

If you´re going to Cancun, you shouldn´t miss one or two of the mayan sites (Tulum and Chichen Itza are just day trips and you could combine Tulum and Coba). On the other site, there were no news that Negril was hit that badly by the latest hurricans. For a survey of the most active time of hurricanes in given Caribbean areas over some years try http://stormcarib.com. But as mentioned by others above, normally June seems safer than other times. Enjoy your trip!
