Hi fellow travellers.
I used to be a "book a flight and play it by ear" kinda gal. I'm well travelled and love to just see where the road takes me.
Now I have 3 kids under 5 and haven't been anywhere for 7 years. I am getting my first "OVERNIGHT PASS" this fall as my inlaws are staying with our kids, husband is going hunting and I am planning on reading, relaxing, swimming and catching up with a couple old friends (child free!).
I'd love some advice on where to go. I'd love it to be gorgeous and NOT particularly kid friendly ;-) But also dont really want it to be a 20 somethings party paradise or a honeymoon lovers getaway… LOL We would be open to a package deal/all inclusive thing or renting a private beach condo. Someplace not too busy and touristy. I am coming from BC, Canada, and the others from Toronto, Canada. Any suggestions? (scuba diving would be a bonus- but not mandatory (I am the only one who dives).

Thanks

I hear you talking!! We got a good last-minute package deal in Jamaica last summer, at the Riu Ocho Ríos. That is a good base in the country if you are interested in daytrips. The hotel is nice, and has an adults-only deluxe wing that was very calm, chic and not particularly lovey-dovey (although you will see honeymooners having a moon/candlelit dinner down on the beach under their own awning). I booked with Sunwing and for the second time with them, I was a happy customer. Jamaica is perfect for just lazing around by the pool. I too have travelled in many poor countries, but the poverty in Jamaica was somehow more depressing. For the first time, I really didn't want to venture outside the plush hotel complex. So while I felt existential guilt about being well-off in a messed-up world, I didn't feel guilty about not running around trying to see sights.

I did not feel this way about the Dominican Republic. I went there twice, once with the family to a Punta Cana resort and more recently on my own for work followed by a weekend of R&R at the secluded and aptly named Casa Bonita in Barahona, in the western part of the country. The captial, Santo Domingo, is well worth visiting too for its fine architecture, cultural scene and dining. I think DR has the prettiest beaches. The country is quite safe compared to others in the region, and I felt perfectly comfortable walking around the streets on my own and chatting with the locals.

Another good Caribbean destination for a mix of culture and poollife is Panama. We stayed at the Decameron Playa Blanca which was vast and sumptuous. The resort welcomes and caters to families, but the kiddies didn't overrun the place (or maybe they did but we didn't notice because we had one too) and there was a definite fashionista vibe throughout as well as an adult-only pool. The beach there wasn't as pristine as DR beaches, but certainly pleasant. Panama City and the canal are definitely worth stopping off at for a couple of nights.

Enjoy your alone time!

I don't share this secret often, but I think Anguilla would suit your needs. All Caribbean destinations are a bit of a trek from YVR, so at least AXA is northerly. Fly into St. Maarten and ferry across, Anguilla flights will be dear. You can public ferry across or arrange for a 'private' pick up, which is great because you and walk across from the airport and avoid bus to public ferry.

Anguilla is laid back and full of stunning white sand and blue water beaches with hardly anyone on them. I stay in a B&B place, rent a car and drive to a new beach every day. No public transit exists. There is great nightly entertainment through the week of local artists and a ton of great restaurants. There is diving as well. You can day trip out to a couple islands and that is about it - no hiking or much else to do. If you want, you can stay a few days in St. Maarten to add some more variety to your trip.
Accommodation can be a bit pricey. I've got a connection on a two bedroom apartment if that might suit? Prices are reasonable.

Other ideas - Grenada is laid back and has some more to do. Barbados has stunning beaches.

I loved Barbados. The weather is perfect year round. There are plenty of house rentals all close to the beach. Check out my write up on it:
