Hello All,

My fiancee and I are planning to take our honeymoon to the Caribbean in June next year. We were planning to stay mainly in the U.S. Virgin Islands, probably St. Thomas, and then take a day trip to another island. An ideal location would be an island with night activity, golf, nice beaches and a good exchange rate to the dollar. Which of the islands would you recommend?

Thank You,
Maria, NJ

i'm not a golfer. only st. thomas and st. croix have golf. st. john doesn't. st. john is the most awesome beauty of the three virgin islands. the only activity on st. john is in cruz bay. and there isn't that much activity. bars, restaurants,.. that's it. scuba, snorkeling, and the most beautiful beaches in the world. i've been to dozens of caribbean islands. there is no place in the caribbean where so much beauty is packed into such a small place as st. john!

we've been to st. thomas and st. john. we were going to go to st. croix and were asked by some, "why would you want to go to a ghetto?" there has been a lot of reports of crime on st. croix. st. thomas has it's share of crime, too. st. john is way better as far as crime goes.

and now the exchange rate... $1.00 u.s. dollar to $1.00 u.s. dollar... it the U.S. virgin islands. it's america! there is no exchange rate! there is nothing to exchange!

If you are talking literally about a day trip to a different island group, I do not think it is practical---or even possible. The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are accessible by ferry from the USVI, but that again is not something you can or would want to one in the span of 1-2 days.

Unless you fly (not a cheap or particularly desirable option for just a day trip), I believe your options are going to be limited to going on the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John (easy and quick), Tortola BVI (easy but very rushed) and possibly Virgin Gorda BVI (I believe it's possible but not practical). If it were me, I'd stay on either St. John and day trip to St. Thomas and then spend a few days on Tortola as well, daytripping to Virgin Gorda or possibly other BVI islands, OR for maximum daytripping flexibility, you could stay on Tortola and day trip to St. John as well as Virgin Gorda and other islands in the BVI chain.

St. Martin is also another decent base for daytripping that you could consider ... you can go to Anguilla, Saba, St. Barths, plus of course St. Martin has a Dutch and French side. However, I'd rather go to either St. John or Tortola than St. Martin.
