Hello,

We are a couple in our 30's, and we will be going to Jamaica with our baby (who will be 9 months old then) for a week in April. I've been reading up on the country, and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for where we should go? We are avid travelers, and we would like to experience the culture (instead of being shielded from it in an all-inclusive resort!). We are looking for a place that isn't set up just for tourists, and we'd like to be on or very near to a beach but with a town nearby (we'd really like to avoid renting a car, so somewhere that we could walk to shops, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.). We're planning on renting an apartment wherever we go and staying in one place for the week (easier with the baby!). Oh, and we'd like somewhere fairly quiet and small.

Does this place exist? We realize we're often looking for the impossible--a quiet beach with a little town right there. Thank you so much in advance!

Laura

PS We're flying into Montego Bay.

Not impossible at all, you might love Duncans Bay as much as I do. Perfect quiet unspoiled beach, no hassle, great neighborhood with people who are fun to meet and spend time with, I love Ja Jewel because Barry and Cher are such great hosts and the apartments are truly one of a kind.

There is a small supermarket you can walk to from there (in Silver Sands), and in town, a 5 minute car ride, a much larger one.

Another area to consider is Treasure Beach. A longer ride form the airport but lovely once you are there. Good options at http://treasuretoursjamaica.com/index.cfm

Treasure Beach Jamaica.
Friendly, very small fishing village, community oriented, very few tourist, no big resorts/hotels.
Several small beaches to choose from that are viturally deserted of tourists, except for locals.
Closest small town is Black River, about 1/5 hour by taxi, but enough shops and stores in village to buy supplies.
Several small hotels and guesthouses to choose from.
For more info check this website.
