I will be traveling to Jamaica next month and staying in Negril for 10 days. Although my main reason for visiting is to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere I am also interested in giving something back to the people of Jamaica. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with any elementary schools and/or orphanages in the Negril area. I would love to be able to visit and drop off some donations for the children, and maybe even volunteer for a few hours. I am hoping I can find a contact before going there so I can bring donations that would be most useful. Does anyone have any experience and/or information on anything like this? So far I was able to find some phone numbers from an old post on tripadvisor, but would rather have something more solid before making a bunch of expensive international phone calls. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Honestly, just show up. There are a few schools local in Negril and few more as you head south towards Little London. They are always in need of anything you can give them. Just think of all the things that a school child could need and decide how much you want to spend. Whenever I come to Jamaica I make sure to bring lots of pens and children's books. Another good thing to do is go to the dollar store and spend $10-$20 on some little toys. An hours pay for us can make a child's year.

The Rockhouse Hotel has their own Foundation. They probably have some good suggestions.

I stayed at Rockhouse after one of the bad mid-2000s hurricanes and they were accepting office supplies (pens, papers, anything) from their hotel guests for the orphanages/schools.

You can bring some school supplies (pencils, pens, paper, etc) are used books (age appropiate) that are in good condition. You will not have to pay any customs duty on this. If asked, just tell the Customs agent that you are donating them to a school.
You can donate them to any primary school in Negril. Just ask the staff at your hotel for helping in locating a school.
ONE LOVE !!

Thanks for all of your input. I think I am going to bring everything down and talk to hotel staff and locals when I get there to find the nearest school.
