My boyfriend and I are thinking of a vacation to Jamaica in early Jan. Do you think it would be safe to travel then with the current civil unrest? Any good deal hotel recommendations-- we are flexible about where we stay geographically, but want somewhere right on the beach, comfortable and friendly accommodations, near good food, chances to explore nature, shop, dive, etc.
Thanks for your help and advice!

Hey Maggie the "civil unrest" you mentioned is way over, and when it was happening, it was only in Kingston (the capital city) and only in one section of the city. A area that no tourists would go to !! So YES it is SAFE for you to vacation in Jamaica.
I would suggest that you spend your time in Treasure Beach, a small friendly community oriented village on the south coast. http://www.treasurebeach.net
Another good friendly area to visit is Port Antonio on the east coast. Both areas will offer what you want, except maybe the shopping. Both areas are safe and tourists friendly, beautiful, and not heavily touristed like the north coast where most of the resorts are located. You will get a more authentic Jamaica in Treasure Beach and Port Antonio.
ONE LOVE !!

Check past posts on JA travel. And, as MM says, the civil unrest you refer to is long over. Go. Enjoy.

Just corroborating, been in Cornwall this past week, and no civil unrest to report, though of course everybody is still talking about the Dudas affair and the pushcart strikes. As long as you aren't a resident of Tivoli or Trenchtown, or happen to be employed by the security forces, any unrest that comes along is very unlikely to affect you.
Come to think of it, there is also news of an ongoing conflict in Sav-la-mar between the police and the ghettoes, but I've passed through there four or five times in the past week without incident.
