first off please forgive spelling errors - learning to type with one hand after re construction surgery. Our family is flying to Montego bay this weekend. rented a house, a car... wondering about maps - are there any for sale that are any good? or are we better off asking locals for directions, relying on google maps?
Also family is action oriented, any suggestions on activities when 1 member is under Dr orders to lie in a hammock & RELAX? Located on north shore for this trip.
Thanks

I picked up a great map of the island, with detailed insets for every major city, from the Shell station in downtown Montego Bay. It is, without exaggeration, one of my favorite souvenirs from my trip. I imagine that it would be available at most gas stations, unless they've run out or what-have-you. It costs about five bucks, and is worth every penny. Asking locals for directions is still a good idea, but a good map will help put those directions in context. Google maps is nice to look at, but absolutely wretched for driving or bus-taking purposes- the Shell map is about 500% better for that.
There are supposedly maps available at the Jamaican Tourist Board booth at the airport, but they were out when I asked them, hence the trip to the gas station. You could also try the JTB offices outside the airport, but I still think the gas station is the most convenient and straightforward option.

Yes get the map from the gas station.
Also ask for directions from locals.
You will definitely need both !!!
This is your first time driving in Jamaica, so you must have nerves of steel !
Not much action oriented activities, except "zip line" and "caving" near the North Coast.
Check these two sites for more action activities.

The fam might like some rafting on the Marta Brae, some caving in the Cockpits ?
and I second (third?) the opinion of the red Shell map- by far the best map of JA available

As the OP wanted to add that we area family unit heading south for Christmas break. youngest in the group is 21, 23 & 50 yr old have open water scuba certification. Mom is casted, so ziplines are out this trip.
Will look for the shell map.
thanks
