I was digging around online and found this SUPER cheap deal. Not sure what to make of it. First off it's a hostel, a dorm like room.

Shared bathrooms, etc.

The ad read like this...

"Silver Star Outback is located in central Negril, about a 15 minute walk to the world famous Seven Mile Beach or to the equally famous Negril cliffs. We offer 1-5 small, private rooms, some connecting, starting @ USD $20 per person nightly, $100 weekly, USD $25 for 2 people nightly, $125 weekly. One of the rooms is a kitchenette with sink, stove, and frig for $10 more. A bed, no a/c, a fan, free internet access, clean linens and towels are provided. We have on site security. It is about an hour and a half from the Montego Bay airport to Negril. Our rooms are ideal for people that want to go out and see REAL Jamaica instead of staying at some resort."

I can't find a web site. Phone number reads, Call Ja 876-395-3161 or US 816-521-8684 and ask for Wags.

This a good idea!?!?!?

I am a bit skeptical about this hostel.
1) There are no hostels in Jamaica.
2) It must be an old ad, because it does not take 1.5 hours from MoBay to Negril with the new highway now built.
3) for just a bit more you can find a private room at a guesthouse in Negril.
Just my "gut" feeling on this.
Maybe it is a great place, but you will not know until you actually see the place.
ONE LOVE !!
Mike

Sounds lke this is a new one, MM. There is a Jan 2010 review of it on Craig's List. Certainly seems worth checking out.

Kind of off topic here but..
Chad...Some time ago you had asked about pirates operating in the Negril area of Jamaica. There isn't a lot that is specific to Negril except this one reference. Sorry about the delay in replying but I hope you find this interesting.

In the summer of 1720 the pirate John Rackhan, better known as Calico Jack, stole the sloop William from Nassau in the Bahamas. After attacking fishing vessels off Harbour Island he headed south to Hispaniola where he intercepted two merchant vessels on the first of October. Two weeks later he took a schooner near Port Maria off the north coast of Jamaica. From there sailed westward past Ocho Rios, Falmouth and Montego Bay until he eventually came to Negril Point. Here he was intercepted by Captain Jonathan Barnet who had a commission from the governor of Jamaica to take pirates. A battle, starting at ten o'clock at night ensued with Calico Jack firing a volley at Barnet who retaliated with a shot that took away the pirates boom, disabling their vessel. Barnet then came along side and boarded the pirate ship. The only resistance he encountered was from two of the most famous women pirates of the day, Anne Bonney and Mary Read who were serving with Calico Jack. Armed with pistols and cutlasses the two women were unable to rouse the men to battle and all were captured. The next morning the pirates were put ashore at Davis's Cove, an inlet halfway between Negril and Lucea and were marched across the island to Spanish Town Jail. All the male pirates were tried and hung, some at Gallows Point near Port Royal and some at the Kingston jail. Calico Jack's body was put in a cage and hung from a gibbet on Dead Man's Cay, today called Rackam's Cay in his honour.
Anne and Mary were also to be hung but as each was pregnant their sentences were reprieved. Sadly, Mary Read died in jail from fever before she could be released. Anne Bonny and her child disappeared and are lost to history.

Can anyone direct me to the review on Craigslist?
(I found the ad, but can't find the review.)

I'm interested in something like this for next week...
Thanks!

I believe that Silver Star is a new name for an older property called Falcon Cottages.

This map shows where it is: http://maherconsulting.com/negril/4-page%20Negril%20Jamaica%20Map%206-2009%20mini%20update.pdf

Use the FIND function in Adobe Acrobat to find it, it's just up a hill from downtown in Negril center.

I don't know anyone who has stayed there since it was Falcon.

I have stayed at Silver Star Outback. I am there at the moment in fact!

I have stayed here twice. Both times I have stayed in the cottages. The rooms are a bit sparse, but the cottages have their own bathroom and kitchenette. The cottages are simple and clean.

If you come during the rainy season, bring a mosquito net!

As far as I can tell, Silver Star Outback is MUCH cheaper than the rest of Negril. It is not fancy at all, but perfectly acceptable. If you have only stayed in 5-star hotels, you probably won't like it. If you don't mind having goats as neighbors, you probably will.

I love the location: right between the cliffs and the beach.

If, having finally translated this #9 post, things are this bad I'd recommend NOT staying there. Question: is iamalegend a glutton for punishment or just seriously challenged as a traveller -- and a writer.

Not a glutton for punishment. SLiglthly challenged in life. experienced in jamiaca. And u get what u pay for if u like to see other peoples trash daily, don't mind lottery scammers over dinner, and a man who wil rent ur room behind ur back, and other things. Avoid it. i am staying if i go back to negril at Mi Yard up street or on beach road off west end. IT was not worth it. ALot of bullshit. Drunks , bad management back stabbers theirs.. and a lot of lies.
