Hiring a "private taxi" works like this.
You ALWAYS bargain your fare with the driver, before getting in the car. In your case it will be several of you, and you will be hiring the taxi for the entire week, which is to your advantage. That way you should bargain for a lower fare per person for each day. It will be best to let the driver know that you will be hiring him for the entire week, and because of that you expect a lower per person fare for each day. I say per person for each day, because the fare could change depending on where you want to go. The farther the distance the higher the fare, but the agreed upon fare should be for the entire day.
The example being that suppose you want to hire him for the entire day to go into MoBay. That daily fare should be lower then say you hiring him for the entire day to Negril. So this is why it is hard to say what a weekly resonable rate for the group should be. However, I can say that anything over $50US per person per day is to high. So ALWAYS bargain and bargain hard. It is the Jamaican way !
Another thing to keep in mind is that the fare you agreed upon is final, and do not pay him until the end of the trip. He is responsible for the gas, however if he says he needs money for gas up front, then it is ok to pay for the gas, with the agreement that the cost of the gas is deducted from the final agreed upon price.
If your driver shows you a good time, and you are happy with him, then you should give him a little extra for a tip, are at least buy him lunch are a beer. You are not required to do this, but I have founded that it works really well for everybody, when some appreciation is showed for a good time that was had by all !!
ONE LOVE !!
