I was thinking about travelling solo in Jamaica for couple weeks mid-Jan to Feb. I found some cheap flights into Montego Bay, but was thinking about heading to Negril and maybe one more place. Essentially I'm desperate for a bit of Caribbean warmth and sun, but don't want to do the resort thing. And I can't afford it anyway.

I have read that there are guesthouses to be found in the US$20-30 range, but I was was wondering how easy they would be to find. I am crazy just rocking up thinking that I'll find something, or is it likely everything would be booked out as it is peak season? I am finding it hard to book anything online other than standard hotels.

In regards to the cost of eating out, is possible to eat dinner or lunch for less than US$10 in places like Negril? I don't need European/American food, happy to eat local fare.

Thanks in advance!

You will have no problem just walking up and finding a "guesthouse" for accomodation anywhere in Jamaica.
You are going to Negril, so I always recommend Jah B's, Negril Yoga Center, and Roots Bamboo for good cheap accomodations. You can google them for more info, are you can check this website for more places in Negril.

The other place that recommend that you spend time in is Treasure Beach on the South Coast. Really friendly community, that is laid back and easy going. Not many tourist and not nearly as developed as Negril.
Good places to stay there is Bebe's Place, Shakespears Cottages, and Golden Sands Guesthouse, all are on Frenchmen Bay.
For more places to stay in Treasure Beach, and more info check this website.

We found a sweet little guesthouse on the west end http://worldstogethertravel.com/jamaica/lodging-positive-vibrations.htm, good folks, good community support, affordable accommodations and food.

Be sure to eat at Sharks at the main road where you turn in to get to Elvis and Lauras. Miss Julie is the best cook, we just kept going back for each daily special!

I think others covered lodging well so I'll just add - yes it's very easy to get meals for under $10US. As a rule eat where locals eat and it's cheapest, but for $10US you can eat where tourists eat too :)
