I'm told the power is different in Jamaica from North America, specifically Canada. What appliances can we bring with us? We can do with out most stuff but I'd really like to bring my laptop along. Also what about my international unlocked mobile phone. Will the charger be compatible or will we need some kind of adaptor?

I do not know about Canada, but it is the same as in USA.
I am assuming that Canada is the same as USA.
So you do not need any adapters for Jamaica.
However, sometimes in Jamaica the electrical supply is not consistent.

Same voltage but 50 cycles instead of 60. So electric alarm clocks, for example, don't work right (are slow). But everything I've brought has been fine...charging laptops and phones is no problem.

The unlocked phone, assuming it is a GSM phone, can work in Jamaica with a Digicel SIM card which you can get for around $10US (at a Digicel/electronics shop) then buy minutes/credit as needed. Incoming calls to JA cell phones are free (to you) and calls to the US are around 25c per min, I assume Canada is similar. Local calls are about 7c a min. Credit is sold everywhere.

As above. We (Canadians) have carried assorted items and all have worked. Locals tell me the lower cycles are the reason small appliances don't last as long as they do elsewhere but it has never been a problem for us.

I use my laptop there annually but never leave it plugged in longer than is necessary for recharging or working on directly, simply because of the potential for power fluctuation.
