Just a copy n' paste heads-up for any possible travelers to Jamaica:
"Air Jamaica airline workers threaten indefinite strike should airline be sold to foreign entity. Consider using alternate airlines.
Summary
A union representing Air Jamaica (JM) workers has threatened to strike if Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding sells the airline to a foreign entity. The National Workers Union said airline workers would force a total lockdown of all flights if such a deal is enacted. Thus far, other JM unions have not joined the strike threat, but nearly all JM workers are opposed to such a sale, resulting in a high likelihood of participation in any labor action.
The government has not yet set a completion date for the divestment of the airline, leaving a potential strike date up in the air. However, there is speculation that Golding must determine a buyer by Feb. 4, ahead of a meeting with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding Jamaica's loan application.
The Golding administration has battled considerable dissent among JM employees since plans to divest the airline first emerged. Airline workers have staged an intense lobby to convince the government to sell the airline to the Jamaica Airline Pilots Association (JALPA). However, the government maintains that JALPA has yet to submit a credible proposal and offer, resulting in ongoing sale negotiations with Trinidad and Tobago's Caribbean Airlines (BW).
JM is one of a number of state-owned assets the government is looking to sell as it attempts to stabilize its faltering economy. Many Jamaicans believe the sale has been pressured by restrictions set under the IMF loan agreement, resulting in growing disapproval of the ongoing negotiations. Minor protests are possible during the Feb. 4 meeting with the international financial organization.
Consider booking flights on alternate airlines until the situation has stabilized."
