What's the deal with the beach at Negril? Are there beach chairs and parasols to rent? Also, if we're both in the water swimming are we gonna have to keep one eye on our camera, bags etc?

The beach itself is public but most of the restaurants and all of the hotels have loungers and shade. In many cases, you can use them for free if you are buying drinks and/or food. For sure at the restaurants, and at many of the hotels.

Many also have a shower you can use to rinse off.

Cosmos up on the far end has all that plus changing rooms, but they charge per person to use their facilities. Not a ton though.

Yes watch your bag...or tip a bartender or security guard to hold it for you while you swim.

Thanks again liz for responding to my post with good info. By the way I checked out your blog. Lots of good tips for driving in Jamaica...

The beach is fantastic if you get a nice sunny day. You can rent all kinds of things on the beach but as mentioned above, you can use them for free at a restaurant if you get the occasional drink (which you'll want anyway if the weather cooperates). My girlfriend and i simply asked an elderly couple enjoying the sun to keep an eye on our stuff while we swam and it worked just fine. Definitely head to rick's cafe for some evening drinks and watch the sun set. You might have to jostle for a good spot but the food and drinks are actually fairly good and the cliff jumping is an added bonus! Bring your bathing suit and try to ignore the incessant pleas for tips by the local divers.
