| travelonging02:04 UTC28 May 2007 | Hi everyone--
We are Torontonians who will be driving out East this summer, to visit my boyfriend's mother's childhood home in Bear River, Nova Scotia. We'd like to make side trips along the way, perhaps stopping in Montreal or Quebec City, etc (I've been to these places and they're lovely, but would like to visit new places as well).
I am interested in your suggestions for a) the best route to take, and b) other such side trips that are (more or less) along the way. I am particularly interested in natural landscapes and hiking excursions (we'll have a small tent, and basic cooking equipment).
I understand there is a ferry to Digby, NS that shaves some time off the drive. Does anyone have any details about this ferry, its cost, schedule, and how much time it saves you?
If we chose to forgo the ferry and drive, your suggested routes and side trips would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for your replies!

With respect to a route, someone mentioned that it is possible to drive through the states to Boston, and catch a ferry there for Yarmouth, NS. Does anyone have any information about this?

If you have time, perhaps you can try the American route using the smaller highways. Then you have endless options to go through Vermont and the Adirondacks in Upper NY. There are plenty of hiking routes in that area. Definitely will take longer but more scenic than the expressway.
