PEI in October

Country forums / Canada / Canada

My husband and I are visiting PEI the second week of October. We have never been to this part of the country and are looking forward to seeing Summerside and Augustine Cove where my grandfather grew up. Could someone suggest a short itinerary? This is part of a larger trip, so we are planning three days in PEI but could go longer. We will have our camping gear, but from what I'm reading it sounds like campgrounds may be closed.

Don't know where you are coming from, but you may find it a bit too cold for camping in October already. Remember PEI is surrounded by water and the winds blow in off the Atlantic.

Your best bet, in my opinion, is to drive across the Confederation bridge to PEI, faster and cheaper. Going by ferry you pay for the car and each adult passenger. Younger kids are free.

Thanks! I had not seen that camping link. We are coming from Portland, Oregon. We are going backpacking in Maine before heading up to PEI and Nova Scotia, so we're prepared for some weather.

Whether you arrive by ferry or by bridge, you don't actually pay for either until the leave the island. The ferry is more expensive than the bridge, so a lot of people arrive by ferry and leave by bridge.
