Ottawa Senators and the Stanley Cup

Country forums / Canada / Canada

They gave it a shot, but it appears they're about to come up short.

Ah well.Summer's here and it's time to forget about hockey and enjoy the warm weather.

Ciao.

I have tried hard to cheer for them, but they're not always easy to cheer for. Alfredsson's little stunt was amusing but not very sportsmanlike.

If anything, this just goes to show how much better the West is, on average, than the East right now. No doubt Detroit would be doing the same thing to Ottawa had they managed to beat Anaheim.

1

ridiculous, second week of June almost and hockey's still on.

2

I resent the insinuation that cheering for Ottawa is the "canadian" thing to do...what a steaming bag of BS. In fact, the ONLY reason I'm pulling for Anaheim is because I refuse to drink the kool-aid.

3

I hate anything that comes out of Ottawa, my tax dollars put the bums in the seats there, if it were not the Capital it would be a small farming town.

Besides the Ducks bounced out Vancouver (Vancouver, played better and harder than those wimps from Ottawa) so I to am pulling for the Ducks.

This is an East-West thing not a Canadian thing, eh!!!

4

Hockey should be finishing in late April at the lastest.... A June Stanley Cup is ridiculous.

5

I'm pretty ambivalent about this series.
I think it'd be cool if Ottawa wins - but could really care less.

6

What did Alfredson do??

7

Just as the period was ending, he drilled the puck at Scott Neidermayer and hit him in the tummy.
It did not look accidental.

8

It's about as relevant to life as who will win the next American Idol...

9

Don't you mean Canadian Idol?
Lets keep this threads 'cancon' level up eh?

10

I just came back from Ottawa yeaterday and Sens fever has certainly gripped the place.

But here's how stupid I am. Yesterday morning at the Ottawa airport, while waiting for my flight, I couldn't figure out why there were a bunch of somewhat disheveled guys hanging around dressed in suits or why people were running around taking pictures of the departure lounge. It wasn't until a group of said guys came along towing bags with Senators logos and people started asking for autographs that I finally realized that it was the Senators, about to board their plane for Anaheim. Duh!

11

Speaking of Canadian Idol....
I've never really watched it before, but did for about 10 minutes last night (season premiere i think?)

I was impressed with how many auditions were shown in which people brought Guitars and played along with their singing - some of them were actually good.

12

I predict the Sens will win tonight in OT, and lose the next one at home.

13

I predict the Sens will win the next 3, and mark the beginning of a golden era for Canadian hockey, whereby Canada will rack up no less than 10 back to back Stanley Cups, (shared equally of course). In ten years time, you will all go aahhh yyeeaahhh, boxy got it right.

14

Do you envision the Canucks winning at least 1 of those 10 Stanley Cup's Andy?
That'd be sweet

15

Sorry Andy but your theory collapses immediately under the weight of this: "shared equally of course". That means the Maple Leafs will win at least one Cup in the next ten years, which goes against all rules of God, man and all that is decent in this world.

16

The Sens are obviously a Canadian team but don't the Ducks have more Canadians playing for them?
The series is just showing that size does matter, the Sens are just too beat up now and the Ducks are able to almost man handle them.

17

Shared equally nigel, 2 a piece... Unless of course Quebec separates, which means if the Habs have the cup at that point in time, it might be re-modelled into a bowl of poutine, and re-named accordingly. A lot of "ifs" and "mights", but highly probable...

18

A team Canada victory in 2010 will more than make-up for any Stan Lee Cup defeats.
Thats' shaping up to be (arguably) the biggest hockey tournament ever.

What's your crystal ball say bout' that?

19

Well my newly aquired hockey skills will be put to good use back home, coaching the up and coming, but highly underrated, Australian Hockey Team. Nicknamed the Popsicles, their prowess on the ice will be visible for all to see, and should prove to be a much discussed topic of conversation among hockey experts from Tofino to Halifax, and Sydney to Perth.

20

Australian Hockey team in the olympics eh?

kinda like the Jamaican bobslead team or "Eric The Eel" right?

21

As unlikely as it sounds nigel, im afraid so...Now if we could just find somewhere to train....

22

Yeah - too bad they can't just play New Zealand every time!

From Wiki:
Australia has the distinction of holding a world record for most goals and highest winning margin in a World Championship game; they defeated New Zealand by a score of 58-0 in 1987.

23

Mighty Roos is an awsome nickname

24

Have a look at the current world standings and notice the similarities between the Canadian team and the Australian team. They have both improved one place. Discard that column on the left.

25

Holy crap nigel, have a look at our coach. He is an ex NHL player.

26

Holy crap Andy, look at all your players, they are Canucks!
Great line in #26, 'discard that left column'....

27

I remember from my visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame a few years ago the display with all of the utterly bizarre uniforms from non-hockey playing countries around the world. The 'Roos uniform was yellow, if I remember correctly, and reminded me of pictures I've seen of the old California Golden Seals.

Why doesn' t some clever entrepreneur get the marketing rights for the IIHF uniforms for t-shirts and jerseys? Hockey being what it is in this country, and the number of immigrants being high, surely there's money to be made in marketing a string of replica 'Roos jerseys as well as China... Japan... Korea... Mexico etc.....

28

It's OK, Andy will get his revenge in September when Australia humiliates us at the Rugby World Cup.

29

How is it possible to score a goal every minute?
I've been strugling with that for an hour and a half?

Wonder if the Kiwi coach decided to pull the keeper at 50 goals?

30

Pulling the goalie in the first period might make sense. At least you'd spend a bit of time in the centre of the ice, every time they scored you'd get to centre for a faceoff.

31

Aero, I just got back from Ottawa too, and my God it was difficult navigating the crowds downtown on Saturday night. The airport was no picnic either. Damned hockey.

[points finger at Pyrrha] Heathen!

33

Ha.

I come from a place with no ice and which is also a long long way from any snow, therefore have never played ice hockey in my life, and have less than zero interest in it.

34

<blockquote>Quote

Pyrrha, I am now your number 1 fan.

35

;-)

Seriously, growing up on the S. Island we don't even get to ski, let alone skate - dunno why anyone here would care about hockey. Water sports on the other hand....

36

Maybe Calgary should have kept JS Giguere when they had him...

37

I heard the TV ratings were down considerably from last year. I'm a little surprised, I actually thought Ottawa would give them a better run.

38

Vancouver Radio station tried calling random numbers in the Anaheim area the day after the game to see if people knew who the new Stan Lee Cup Champion was. I'm sure you can guess what the result was...

39

I'll get an early start: Vancouver in '08!

40

We should PM cell numbers so we can all meet up at the parade!

41

A Los Angeles radio station did something similar back in October of '81 to see if the average Joe living in the vicinity of Disneyland knew who Fernando Valenzuela was after the Dodgers won the World Series.
They got the same result.

42

How was the gay pride parade in PA the other day, Fritz?

43

It was great.Did it make the news in Edmonton?

44

It was broadcast live here.

45

There was a gay pride parade in P.A.?

What next?

46

There was a small turnout for the parade but it was a turnout nonetheless.

47

The fact that TV viewing audience was down 18-20% this year for the playoff gives an indication of how much Canadians actually care about hockey, especially in June.
