Newfoundland: St. John's, Bonavista and Ferryland

Currently planning on staying 3 or 4 nights in St. John's upon arrival in 3 weeks. Have 3 reserved, but thinking of 4. Lots to do in terms of walking tours (incl. self-guided) and nearby sites to drive to? Planning on a whale/puffin-watching boat cruise out of Bulls Bay. St. John's feasible as a base for this, tool, or better to stay near BB?

Bonavista sounds relaxing, but small and quiet. Easy to get to other sights on the peninsula? Thinking of 3 or 4 nights there.

Want to see Ferryland and thought of staying near there. Accommodations very limited, it seems. Suggestions?
