Hotel recommendation Quebec City

Country forums / Canada / Canada

I'm in Quebec City with work next week - any recommendations of somewhere to stay? (please help and save me from the naff and/or crap places our travel folks try to out us in!). Looking for 4/5 star places, budget around $250/night. Also looking for a recommendation for places to eat in the evening on a mid range budget - French food would be good - willing to splash out on something upper mid range if it's really good!

Many thanks for any tips!
Andrea

I rarely rave about hotels, but Auberge St. Antoine is an excellent boutique hotel, one of the best hotels I've stayed in anywhere. The decor, service, location and hip-without-rudeness vibe all make for an outstanding stay. (And at something under C$200 per night, you could easily pay 2-3 times as much in a place such as New York and get less for it.)

It gets rave reviews in LP's accomodation guide (at the top of this page) as a "Top 5" pick, and those kudos are well deserved. Absolutely a terrific find, it's a shame that more hotels aren't this good.

I've never stayed at Le Chateau Frontenac so I probably shouldn't say anything, but it has the reputation of being one of the nicest places to stay in the City. I think it may be over $250 though.

Echo #1's recommendation for Auberge St-Antoine. Never stayed there but hosted a corporate event there this winter. It's a really beautiful building, the service are top-notch, the location is great and it's got that extra "boutique hotel" intangible that the chains can't match. They have a restaurant in the hotel that's one of the top-rated ones in the city. They run historical tours of the building that are actually really fascinating; the crowd at our event was mostly local businesspeople and they all found it interesting, despite not being tourists.

Some friends stayed at Chateau Frontenac and were very disappointed, though that might have had more to do with overblown expectations.

Roadwarrior and segacs - you've sold me! That said I'm still open to thoughts but the St. Antoine is top of the list currently - I'll post my "travel" people's recommendations when they get back to me for a laugh: they're invariably dire and cost more.

Thanks for your thoughts - much appreciated!
