Getting About In Newfoundland

What is the best way to travel in rural Newfoundland outside the St John's area is it possible to hitch a lift in the costal areas and how easy is it to get acomadation in the outports and what is the price per night

Coastal areas i should have said

Rent a car. Try not to drive fast after dark, so many moose on the roads.
Prices can range from $70 for a B&B, to $140. for a hotel room
Assuming that we're talking about the summertime.

Agree with #2, renting a car is the best (if not always the cheapest) way to go. Hitching is possible but I don't recommend it. Regular busses run along the Trans-Canada but they typically don't make it to the coastal areas. There may be irregular mini-van serive from Grand Falls, Gander etc. but the schedules aren't great.

Very easy to hitch a ride. Prices for accomodation can be expensive. Bring a tent if it is summertime as there are many campgrounds. Failing that, head to a local bar and meet some people.

What are the Pubs like in the rural areas of Newfoundland is there a good atmosphere in them and good music ???

not recommended to hitch a ride, not that the newfie wont let you but some are really wary. expect lots of beer and good irish-NL music, some of the more "advanced" pub play the local top 40. its very easy to meet people in newfoundland and they are the friendliest bunch i've met so far. i suggest for you to rent a car as well. they are buses, but the last time i checked, they are about $65 one way from st john's to corner brook and they go all the way thru, so not really a good way to see the island.

I travelled by car through NFLD about 8 years ago. Very friendly people. I blew a tire out on the Trans Canada and literally 5 cars stopped to help. The out posts were not set up for tourism then, we were told and did walk into the pub/legion and inquire if anyone has an empty house to stay in (lots of empty houses!) Cost about 35.00 for the night. Enjoy George St. too, great music.
