Driving rental car into Canada

Country forums / Canada / Canada

Hello,

I plan on taking a rental car into Canada from the US and have heard that some rental companies won't allow this. If this is true, does anyone know of a company off-hand that allows their cars to be taken out of the US in order to save me the time of calling a bunch a different places. Also, if anyone is famaliar with any other wierdness that one might not expect when crossing the border could you give me a heads-up on what they might be. Thanks much for the help. Take care.

I have known of several people bring rental cars into Canada from the US. Make sure they know and you may need to get a document form them to show at the border if asked.

Some rental companies don't allow it, particularly those that don't have Canadian outlets, and some provide you with documents that say you are allowed to. The thing is that I've never heard of customs asking or caring whether you're allowed to or not, or even asking for the rental agreement a lot of the time. if they do it's just to make sure you have a valid one and it's off you go. there's nothing illegal about driving it across border, but is instead a matter of the renters' corporate policy, so it's not customs' job to enforce that.

One time I was returning from a weekend trip from the US to Montreal and US customs asked me if I owned the car. It was my car, but I assume if I said it was a rental, they might inquire further??

I can't remember which major company it was with, but I did encounter one bit of "wierdness." Although they told me entering into Canada was OK, the collision damage waiver that they tried to sell me did not cover me while in Canada. I wasn't planning on getting it anyway as I had appropriate insurance. But if you are planning on relying on CDW in lieu of insurance, you should be sure that it does cover you in Canada.
