cycling on PEI

Country forums / Canada / Canada

We are putting together a cycling trip to PEI for 2010. I have a few general questions to help get the planning started. Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

What are the best months for a cycling trip on PEI? We're assuming late May, June, Sept and early Oct. July and August are high tourist season and we would like to avoid that.

What are your favorite trails and roads to cycle? The group (aged 60+) will range from avid cyclists (80 to 100 km/day is fine) to very casual ones for whom 40 or 50 km/day is the limit.

What else do we need to know about for this trek?

I know these are very open-ended and basic questions but as we are just starting to put the trip together, these are what we need to know now.

Thanks for understanding and for any information you can supply to help plan this trip.

One word of caution-in Atlantic Canada facilities for tourists tend to shut down tight after Labour Day-check carefully.

tripadvisor.com has more info on PEI than this place.

Check out the Confederation Trail . It goes from one end of PEI to the other and many side trails are connected to it.

2

The Confederation trail is quite rough at times. I recommend 35mm tires or more, at least 32mm.

A great ressource for Atlantic Canada cycling: http://www.atlanticcanadacycling.com/cyclingdata/pei/index.html

Use a map and check the road ratings.
