My wife and I are planning a trip up to the French Islands off the coast of Newfoundland. Has anyone been there? Any suggestions on where to stay and what to do while up there? We are hoping also to go to Prince Edward island. We are driving from the United States and were wondering if there are ferries from P.E.I to New foundland as well. Also we love trying local cruisine. Anything we should try while we are up there?
Thanks
Trent

the french islands are very, very quiet. good if you want to just relax at a cottage, walks, etc.
there is no ferry from pei to newfoundland. you need to take the bridge or ferry from pei and drive up through nova scotia/cape breton to sydney and catch the ferry from there. if you haven't been, cape breton is worth 4 days as well.
Local cuisine on PEI usually revolves around seafood. Most tourists who can afford it will have a lobster while on the Island. We also have some pretty fantastic mussels on the Island.

To get to PEI you need to use the bridge from Nova Scotia and back, then go to Sydney as #1 says above. In Sydney, you can choose to take the ferry to Port-Aux-Basques on the west coast of NFLD, or Argentia on the east coast of NFLD. The ferry to St.-Pierre (I don't think it takes cars) leaves from Fortune on the tip of the Burin Penninsula, the hanging-down bit of land on the southeast coast of NFLD, at least 5 hours drive from St. John's NFLD. Alternatively you can fly from St. John's directly to St.-Pierre.

I'm pretty sure the bridge to PEI goes from new brunswick and the ferry goes from Nova Scotia. You might want to make sure before you head out.

The bridge does go from New Brunswick at Cap Jourimain.
There is two ferry leaving from North Sydney, Nova Scotia and arriving at Argentia and Port aux Basque in New founland. Then in Newfounland you gonna have to drive to Fortune to get the ferry to St-Pierre

Book your newfoundland ferry in advance. They're pretty full in the summer months. They still haven't build that land link from PEI to Port Aux Basques yet, so you'll have to go to Cape Breton like everyone has mentioned. Lobster dinners are the big thing in PEI. We went to one near New Glasgow. Yummy! Started with a bucket of mussels and went to heaven from there. In Kensington we found a combination arena-bowling alley-restaurant with a locally drawn picture of the Queen on the wall that must have been 50 years old. Had the best bowl of seafood chowder I've ever had in my life on a Sunday morning. PEI is big on potatoes as well, I never got enough of them when we were there.
stcywll, There definetly is a New Glasgow in NS, but there is also a small but beautiful one in PEI to be sure. The problem in Canada is that our ancestors really weren't very creative when it came to naming freshly settled towns in the New World. So probably every province and no doubt most US states have at least one town called New Glasgow, London, York, Belfast...Just about every single town on PEI has an equivalant in the UK, Ireland, and neighouring Provinces.
