I am taking an extended leave from June to September. I will be driving up the East Coast of the US to Nova Scotia. Then over to Quebec City. I need to be in Omaha, Nebraska 2 weeks after I leave Quebec City. My one question at this time is, what is there to do between Ottawa and Winnipeg?
I like hiking and all things in nature. I will be driving.
Algonquin Provincial Park or one of the parks along the north coast of Lake Superior are places to think about.
There are a lot of parks that offer hiking, camping, and water-based activities.

The Canadian Shield is FANTASTIC for hiking!! Make sure to give time around The Ont/MB border. By the time you travel fire restrictions should be lifted & you can hit some great back country treks!
Are you interested in kayaking on Lake Superior? There are two outfitters I have used, one near Wawa and one in Rossport. Twelve kilometres off the shore at Rossport you'll find the Slate Islands which is home to the world's most southerly population of Woodland Caribou and it's a surreal experience to be tenting on the islands and have the caribou wandering through your camp and brushing up against the tent all night. The caribou don't have any natural predators on the islands and they can't be hunted so they are far from shy.

And what about music festivals? In August there are three small folk music festivals that are more or less along your route to Manitoba. Would that interested you for a day or a weekend?
