Hi I will be traveling from San Francisco through Canada to end up in Massachusetts..
All this with Greyhound bus.
Questions:
1) do I need a visa? I read that US citizens can travel in Canada for 6 months with no visa. True?
2) how long will it take to cross country by bus? I would like to stop in Calgary ...or does anybody have done this and have suggestions?
I thank you for a reply

You don't need a visa. I don't know the exact details of how long you can stay. I suspect you'll get a grilling from Canadian immigration if you tell them you want to travel in Canada for 6 months...

It takes several days to cross Canada by bus. You can look up schedules and times on Greyhound's website. Is there any particular reason why you want to stop in Calgary? Of all the potential things to see and do while crossing Canada, visiting Calgary would be very low down on my personal list.

Hi Giora, thank you for your reply.
No I don't have specific reasons to visit Calgary...
What do you suggests?
I will not say 6 months at the border's officers but 2-3 weeks ..would that be acceptable?
Thank you for a reply

As #1 says you do not need a visa but you do need a passport to cross the border. It takes about three days on the bus from Vancouver to Toronto if you do it non-stop, plus about a day from San Francisco to Vancouver and a day from Toronto to Massachusetts. If you want to stop someplace like Calgary then you usually need to buy separate tickets like Vancouver to Calgary then Calgary to Toronto. There are limited locations that you can cross the border on the bus these days, it is not a problem around Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal but between British Columbia and Ontario there are no border crossings served by bus, you need car.

Thank you Marla 55!
Your info are very useful.
Which place do you suggest to visit on the bus route? Like Vancouver to Toronto...is there a place that is a must see?
I thank you
For a reply.

The scenery in British Columbia is very nice but there is not really any particular place to stop; once you get through the Rockies the Prairies are not very exciting, after Winnipeg you get to the Canadian Shield, lots of pine trees, rocks and lakes, not as good as the Rockies but more exciting than the Prairies, however after three days on the bus you will no longer care. Any of the cities on your way will have some museums if you decide to stop and Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa will have lots to see. From Vancouver you could also make a side trip to Victoria on Vancouver Island (the city of Vancouver is on the mainland), from Toronto you could make a side trip to Niagara Falls, from Montreal you could make a side trip to Ottawa.

Hi Maronna,
I'm not sure what your interests are or when you are travelling but Vancouver Island is great for the outdoors and Vancouver is a wonderful diverse city for food, shopping, biking and there are mountains to ski and hike. I have only been through Calgary and didn't feel the need to stop but sure there is something of interest there:) I haven't spent time in Toronto as an adult but any non-Canadian traveller I meet comment how much they love this city so you should think about stopping there and I might go back there one day myself.

Thank you Caballodemar...I might go to Toronto , Montreal and Ottawa...
Vancouver island is a thought..I will see how much time I have.
( I have to be on the east coast end of September )

Calgary is not much in itself, but the Rockies nearby are spectacular. You can easily spend a week or more doing a loop from Calgary to see the mountain scenery. Plenty of tours including Moose Network/Tours which offers low cost, somewhat hop-on, hop off bus tours from Vancouver through to Calgary.
