A Los Angeles radio station did something similar back in October of '81 to see if the average Joe living in the vicinity of Disneyland knew who Fernando Valenzuela was after the Dodgers won the World Series.
They got the same result.

There was a small turnout for the parade but it was a turnout nonetheless.

The fact that TV viewing audience was down 18-20% this year for the playoff gives an indication of how much Canadians actually care about hockey, especially in June.
