Hello: My friend and I would like to go to Newfoundland to see the icebergs at their best. I have heard that the best time to go, when you're likely to see them is July- August. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? We will fly into St. John's probably and rent a car. Maybe an RV? We're in our 60's so camping doesn't appeal to us but nature does and we like to be independent as well... Suggestions for sights to see as well would be welcomed. We are in good physical shape for hiking, biking, etc. We have about 2 weeks to spend there.
Thanks in advance for your time.

We have traveled around Newfoundland on two occasions. June/July is actually the best time to see icebergs. August may be too late. The first time we rented a car and stayed in B&Bs. Was very good experience. The second time Newfoundland was part of a cross Canada trip and so we drove our own small RV. That was also an excellent experience. They have wonderful provincial parks with great facilities. There is nothing quite like setting up your campchairs and watching your own personal iceberg sail on by. Hard to do that from a hotel :) The picturesque town of Twillingate is located on what they call "Iceberg Alley" so make sure you visit it. Whales and puffins are also a big deal in Newfoundland. We saw those from a boat trip we took out of Bulls Bay near St John's. Google "Newfoundland and Labrador" for the province's tourism site. They will send you a great tour guide and map. Also visit my website http://www.lifewellspent.com and scroll down to Canada/Twillingate for a road report and pics. Should give you some ideas of what you can do.

June is the month that the icebergs peak. The arrive as early as April and can stick around until mid-July. There is never a guarantee as the wind places a major role. Great show if you hit a good season... There is a great website iceberfinder.com.

Don't forget to order your National Geographic Map of Newfoundland... cannot purchased in store, must be ordered on-line.
