Hi all

I'm going to a wedding in Montreal with family visiting from all over the world. Everyone has booked at http://www.appartementhotel.com/contact-us.html but I have missed the boat and no space left for me there! I want to be close to my family staying there as I never see them (I'm from London, they live in California) - any recommendations for that area for 1st week August? What is that area like?

Or is it a blessing in disguise and should I stay elsewhere in a different area (somewhere more fun, cool cafes, creative/arty things nearby, would love to be near a swimming pool and green space)? Though I don't want to have to travel far to hang out with them as they have small kids and I never see them.

The hotel is downtown. There are probably more than 100 other hotels within a 20 minute walk. I would suggest using sites like Trip Advisor or Hotels.com to see what is available in your price range. You sound like you might like the Plateau neighbourhood - it is a little more residential and "hip" than downtown. However, most accommodation there will be in bed and breakfasts and gites. Given that hotels are more common downtown and your family is there, I would stay in downtown. The Plateau is easily accessible from downtown via bus, metro, or even a good, long, walk. Probably the most popular area to stay is in Old Montreal but it may be a bit far from your family, so, again, another vote for downtown. For green space, you can easily walk up Mont-Royal from downtown.

Thanks, having that orientation and explanation is really helpful. I found an air bnb in le plateau by accident, googled that area and it does actually sound lovely. So maybe it's a blessing in disguise. The hotel apartment my family are at just updated me and said there is infact space for me there but maybe I'd have more fun staying in a cool home in le plateau AND can visit my family (and this place I think is cheaper). Thanks for your advice, was spot on.

Well, AirBnB type rentals are illegal in Montreal. Places do get listed but you never know what might happen.

Downtown is a good place to be. I don't think you'll have any difficulty in finding an accomodation in Sherbrooke Ouest. Infact there is couple of hotels on the very next lane. I think I'll be able to check out few places for you in that area. I've recently checked out an apartment, just 5 min drive from the L’Appartement, and is in discussion with the mortgage brokers, Northwood Mortgage. It should have been processed couple of weeks before itself but the new hike in loan premiums by CMHC has completed things. That's too much of my details. Will check about the place personally and update you in couple of days.
