L'Autre jardin is a very special hotel in Québec City, an offshoot of Carrefour Tiers-Monde, an organization of international cooperation that aims to further sustainable development and fair trade on our planet. That does not mean it is a hippie-dippie place with lumpy mattresses; it is a lovely inn, with an original décor and a lovely welcome, in French, English, Spanish and no doubt many other tongues.
(I have nothing to do with this small hotel - I'm starting a thread on it because I think it is of particular interest to Lonely Planet types, and probably worthy of inclusion in a future guidebook or internet listiing). For one person, it is somewhat more expensive than a hostel, but the accomodation is much nicer. The double rate is almost comparable. All rooms have an en-suite bath; some have whirlpool baths.
There is free high-speed internet in the front hall. The hotel has conference rooms, and given the moderate rates, is a good place to organise meetings for many different sectors.
This hotel is located in the upper part of St-Roch, just below the hill leading to the Old City. St-Roch was a disreputable area for many years, but since the building of the new library and the demolition of the ill-reputed "malling" of rue St-Joseph, it has become a very lively area with good restaurants and bistros, interesting shoppings, a nice urban park. (Read the NYTimes review, "The Redemption of St-Roch", on the reviews page).
It is a short walk (uphill) to the Old City; you can also take a bus or taxi. Not bad for a supper or evening up in the Old City or St-Jean-Baptiste, as you are walking downhill afterwards!
I have stayed there and was very pleased with both the facilities and the welcome, as were friends.
