Perhaps it's a silly question, but anyway... I'm an EU citizen in Canada, having been here for four months. When I originally came here, I intended to go back in May so that's the date I asked to be put on my passport. Liking it quite a lot here, I decided to extend my stay for one month more. Now, I have to leave the country and come back in order to get the whole thing extended. It shouldn't be a problem since Canada usually gives people with my passport the right to stay 180 days and I won't exceed that limit even with the extra month - none of my compatriots here have had any problems when leaving the country and returning again. The only thing I'm wondering is whether I need to stay away over the night or whether a few hours is enough? Any help appreciated!

(ps Note that it's not a visa-question. I'm not here on a visa nor do I need to apply for one as long as I don't stay longer than the 180 days)

You didn't say where you are located. If you are near a major "Port of entry from the US, I suggest you go down and talk to them. They may let you walk across the "border" and come back but they may not. Much depends on the individual. You'll want to discuss it with them and nothing beats face to face.

Thanks for the answer! I live in Montreal, so the US border isn't too far away. What I was thinking of was to take the bus to Vermont, it returns two hours later.

As you go through the border, make sure to talk to the CADS

Definitely. Although I don't doubt that Vermont can be nice, talking to them is my only reason for doing the trip. I just wish I knew in advance if I have to stay away over the night or not. If they tell me that I do, I can always go again the next day - but of course I'd like to be done with it after my first trip.
