hi all,

hoping someone can help me. we are looking to get to montreal from boston around the beginning of june - we will more than likely have an amtrak pass and were hoping to get there by train. Is there a direct, or even slightly indirect rail service?? everything ive tried on amtrak.com says no, but others keep telling me there is!! im sure there is a bus we could take, but if we have the pass we'd rather use that.

many thanks.
Mark

Amtrak only goes to Albany and New York from Montreal. But there are plenty of buses from Boston. Check with Greyhound. Takes about 7 hours by bus.

Whoever told you there is a direct or slightly indirect route was wrong. It can be done by train but you'd have to go to NY first. I'd guess a total of about 15 hours. The bus is 7 like #1 states. Probably around $60 for the bus one way.

thanks for that guys....we may head up from NY when we get there. Is it worth a little backtracking to pay montreal a visit?

(This opinion comes from a Montrealer, so naturally is NOT AT ALL biased): Hell yes!

If you'll be here in summer, it'll be just in time for the dozens of summer festivals, including the biggies - the Jazz Fest and the Comedy Fest - plus many smaller ones like the fireworks festival at the Old Port, the Francopholies, the Nuits d'Afrique, Fantasiafest, the World Film Fest, the Fringe Fest... just to name a few of my favourites. That means it'll be exciting and alive. It also means accommodations book out well in advance, so book early.

I'm not a Montrealer, but will agree with segacs - Just walking around you will enjoy this very lively city.

Sadly, there is no longer train service between Boston and Montréal - and NYC would take you FAR out of your way - the trip is longer from NYC to MTL (almost due north) than from Boston.

I really wish they would restore railway service between these two historic cities - it would bring them closer together.
