This summer I'm going to be traveling to the East Coast. At one point in my trip I will need to get from Montreal to Kingston NY (not Kingston Ontario). In Kingston I'm going to be at a camp in the Catskills for a week, and then return to Montreal. I have no car and am trying to figure out the best way to do this.

I see two options:

1) Greyhound or other bus service. There seems to be no direct way to get to Kingston by bus. Also once in Kingston, I will still have to cab to the final Camp location, which seems to be a bit of a ways outside of town.

2) Rent a Car This would obviously be much more convenient, but I am concerned about the difficulties of bringing a car across the border for a week and hidden fees and such.

Does anybody have any insight into this, particularly into cost differences? Are there any other travel options I might be missing?

Well, personally i will be looking at one important factor and that is "convenience". I would love my trip to Kingston NY and my stay there to be comfortable. If you go with bus services, you will find out that at the end of the day, you must have spent very close to the money you will use in renting a car, (i.e after paying for bus services and other transportation fares to get you to exactly where you are going). And I really don't think bringing a car across border is a big deal, if you have all paper work done rightly. But since you are going to be in camp for one week, what I have done before in this kind of situation and I suggest you do, is rent the car and ask for a driver that can take you to Kingston and then return the car.

There are buses. Adirondack Trailways runs buses between Montreal and Albany and between Albany and Kingston.

Most rental companies allow you to take a car into the US. The rates might differ and they may not grant you unlimited mileage. You will have to check the specific terms for different companies. But as long as you agree to all charges before hand, there won't be any "hidden fees."

I rent cars in Ontario frequently, and drive down to the Lake Placid area with no problems. Just ask/advise the company that you would like to go down to the states. Also - I've never had it be an issue at the border. I had one agent ask me if it was my car, and I told him it was a rental and he waved me through.
