I'm visiting my sister in Montreal right now and we are thinking of taking a couple day's to go to Quebec City. I'm from Victoria so not to sure on the best things to see in a short time period. We're gunna rent a car and probably just crash in a hostel in the city (any recomendations?)
We want to go to a couple touristy things and hit a couple bars if we can. We must be back in montreal by Thursday for Beerfest. :)
Thanks!
Christine

There are 2 hostels in Qc City, and both are located within the walls, in the Old Town. The big Hostelling International Hostel is located at 19, Ste-Ursule St, and the smaller independant Auberge de la Paix is at 31, Couillard St, in a narrow, twisted European-style street; the latter is preferred by Europeans, and there are cooking facilities (enjoy a light lunch at Chez Temporel).
You might consider travelling in between Mtl & Qc City by bus, rather than renting a car: there are departure every hour from both cities, and you won't need to worry about parking fees (not precisely cheap in Qc City) and cost of gas. If you choose that option, make sure you get off at the 2nd stop in Québec, at the "Gare du Palais" bus/train station. From there, an uphill walk to either youth hostel will take you between 20 and 30 minutes max, or cost a whopping average $6. cab fare. The journey between the 2 cities has nothing scenic enough to write home about, and a car would be useful only if you'd plan a day trip of some sort; Old Quebec is fairly compact and easily walkable.
Check this link and also this one for a couple ideas. The Petit Champlain pedestrian street and neighbourhood is quite popular, as is Le Marché du Vieux-Port (Old Port's Farmer Market) and a short ferry ride across the river to really enjoy the city's skyline. Do not miss Chez Érico, a museum on chocolate where you may have the same hot chocolate as Mayas did, or treat yourself with real good chocolates, and J.A. Moisan, said to be the oldest grocery (and deli) store in the country, both are on St-Jean St (Upper Town). Have a late afternoon drink at L'Astral, the revolving restaurant on the top of the Loews Le Concorde Hotel: it takes 1 hour for the restaurant to make an entire tour on itself - ask to be seated in the Bar section. The Loews itself is located on Grande-Allée St, THE street for people-watching while having a drink. Le Dagobert is a popular club there, and Chez Maurice across the street as well.
Enjoy !
